Jewels for the Sunshine

This time I would like to present our new Moonycollection, a collection with rings, earrings and pendants featuring the fresh, bright colours of Spring and Summer time.

What is most peculiar to the Moony jewels is their being chubby, solid and rounded. They look sound and full-bodied like jewels that will stay with you for a very long time.

We are presenting them in the warm tones of pink gold, both mirror-polished and satinated, accompanied by beautiful natural gems such as moonstone and coral.

The Moony rings are perfect for wearing together, mixing colours and sizes.

As you can see in the picture above one of the rings is showing a marvelous red Mediterraneancoral, cabuchon cut.

Coral is a real Wonder coming from the depths of the sea and it is a classic choice for jewelry, something that will increase in value year after year.

I would like to spend a few words about it so that we are all well aware of what it is exaclty and how we should handle it.

Unlike most other gemstones which are of mineral origin, Coral is organic, formed by living organisms. It forms from branching, antler-like structures created from coral polyps in tropical and subtropical ocean waters.

When the coral polyps die, the hardened skeleton remains, and this material is what is used as a gemstone. Most coral is white, but nature can create coral in several other colors, including the popular orange to red forms. This Red Coral, or Precious Coral as it is often known by, is the most used gemstone form of Coral. In fact, the color known as coral is derived from the typical pinkish-orange color of many red Coral gemstones.

Precious coral or red coral is the common name given to Coralliumrubrum and several related species of marine coral. The distinguishing characteristic of precious corals is their durable and intensely colored red or pink skeleton, which is used for making jewellery.

The original species, Corallium Rubrum, is found mainly in the Mediterranean Sea. It grows at depths from 10 to 300 meters below sea level, although the shallower of these habitats have been largely depleted by harvesting. In the underwater caves of Alghero, Sardinia (the "Coral Riviera") it grows at depth from 4 to 35 meters. The same species is also found at Atlantic sites near the Strait of Gibraltar, at the Cape Verde Islands and off the coast of Southern Portugal. Other Corallium species are native to the western Pacific, notably around Japan (Corallium japonicum) and Taiwan; these occur at depths of 350 to 1500 meters below sea level in areas with strong currents.

Red corals have the shape of small leafless bushes and grow up to a meter in height. Their valuable skeleton is composed of intermeshed spicules of hard calcium carbonate, colored in shades of red by carotenoid pigments.

The hard skeleton of red coral branches is naturally matte, but can be polished to a glassy shine. It exhibits a range of warm reddish pink colors from pale pink to deep red; the word coral is also used to name such colors. Owing to its intense and permanent coloration and glossiness, precious coral skeletons have been harvested since antiquity for decorative use. Coral jewellery has been found in ancientEgyptian and prehistoric European burials, and continues to be made to the present day. It was especially popular during the Victorianage.

Precious coral has relative density of 3.86 and hardness 3.5 on the Mohs scale. Due to its softness and opacity, coral is usually cut en cabochon, or used to make beads.

The coral we chose for our Moony rings and earrings is red, orange-red and white . The colours are perfect for the coming good season, for sunshine and bright skies and they match both a pale carnation and a tanned one.

Here white coral, so delicate and feminine, is mounted on pink gold with some champagne diamonds in the lovely collection Petit Colour, a small concentrate of real elegance.

Now a brief note about the way you should treat your coral gemstone after the purchase.

Coral, as seen before, is organic material basically consisting of calcium carbonate. It is subject to corrosion by chemical agents such as perfumes, soaps, some creams and, in the long run, also human sweat. So we recommend that you should:

  • rub your product with a dry or partially-wet cotton cloth, without using any kind of soap;

  • carefully avoid direct contact with the above-mentioned substances; it is better to spray perfume on your body prior to wearing a coral jewel;

  • keep your product away from heat sources, such as shop-window lights; exposition to intense heat can alter shades and even colours.

If you follow these simple instructions your coral will always look shiny and bright and ready for wearing, any time you feel like doing so.So we really hope it was an interesting reading ….now why not going to the Brusi web-site and think about a present for yourself? Better round or oval? Big or small size? Or the 2 combined together?

We leave you with such a challenging riddle!!!!

See you next month!!!
